I have a 1998 chevy 4x4 1\2 ton truck, and my rear differential is making noise at any speeds i had it looked at by a expert he says i need to completely rebuild it. My question is can i (with limited experience) possibly do it myself or is it not for do-it-yourselfers?

The most important thing with rebuilding a rear is properly aligning the pinion gear to the ring gear and measuring backlash. If you get these two things wrong you will blow up the rearend.
You also need a dial indicator with a magnetic base to measure backlash. However, completely rebuilding may not be necessary. What is your rear doing? Why did the mechanic say it needs to be completely rebuilt?
If the problem is just a pinion or axle bearing then I'm sure you can do it.. Let me know I'll help if I can
