My '93 3500 4x4 will not stay engaged. The indicator light is lit, although it takes some manuvering for this to happen (N -> Shift to 4x4 -> R -> back up a ways -> D -> repeat until engaged! NO noticable clunck/click once engaged.) It seems as though the front wheels are pulling if you barely accellerate, but once you push hard on the throttle there is a sound similar to a card on bicycle spokes either in the left hub or the transfer case. You can tell the front end has disengaged by the way the rearend fishtails.
I got the truck from my father-in-law who used it to pull a gooseneck grain trailer. He would engage 4x4 to get up off of the shoulder of the road when loaded, then disengage 4x4 once moving. He said he replaced the accuator a couple of years ago and that it didn't make any grinding style noises when it went out.
Is the left side the main front drive side on this truck? Am I more likely to be looking at new hubs or transfercase work or a new accuator again (assuming case and hubs are engaging before popping out under load)?
