brake lights stay on

chevy s10, 2000, 58,000 miles and I do believe a 4.3 engine. Rear brake lights are staying on. The third brake light on top of cab operates correctly. Replaced the switch under the dash. Same problem. But when I replaced the switch, and unpluged the wires from the switch, the lights still stayed on! I found that to be very strange!

Any ideas?

Well I found out the problem!!

For a total of $442.00 including tax, the solution to the problem is take the steering column apart and replace the "multi-functional hazard switch" and then put it all back together again. Problem solved.
