starter motor replacement and location?

changed bad starter put new one on now the there is voltage problems liike the altanator is bad is there a wire from starter to altanator

As you can see from the power distribution diagram, there is no direct connection.

Yesterday my silonoid would click id roll the truck back bump the clutch and the starter would work would start. i changed the starter and its just clicking with service engine soon on is their any way to check the service engine soon? the started got grounded because the sheild was touching it is their codes for this it isnt check engine light

Hello,

Have you check the condition of the battery? or tried to jump start it? Also check the ground cable.

To get codes go by your local auto zone they will pull them for free

2.2 liter 5 speed the starter just wizzes , when the starter was going out it was grinding and would start but it started then the next time nothing.

It sounds like the solenoid went bad. Disconnect the neg terminal from the battery. Remove the wiring from the starter and mark it to make it easy to replace. There are two bolts that hold the starter in place. Remove them and remove the starter.

Reverse sequence to replace.

Check to see if there is power to the starter. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire. You should have 12v

Thanks for taking my question. Today I went to replace my starter, what I thought would be pretty simple. Well in working in the tight confines under the truck, I connected the smaller of the wires to the wrong post on the starter. When I went to start the truck I saw some smoke coming from under the hood. I found my mistake and corrected it, but a friend thinks I blew a fuse somewhere. Do you have any suggestions on where I could find it?

Check crank fuse no.20 if okay test the black and blue fusible links at the alternator

Thanks, I had checked the crank fuse already but will check the alternator link like you suggested. I do recall seeing smoke from that area at the time. Can you tell me the best way to test? Voltmeter?

You can do it with the voltmeter or just a test light before and after the link.

I am having trouble locating the links you referred to. Are they actually connected to the alternator? I have only found one connector to the alternator.

Check the one too-the others could be down at the starter

When reconnecting the battery after starter replacement, the starter fires and engine immediately tries to turn over without key in ignition or switch turned to on position. Why? I am frustrated and out of thoughts. Thanks

Check the small wire on the starter solenoid. It is likely mispositioned and is touching the large terminal with the battery cable attached to it. If that is not the case, disconnect that smaller wire from the solenoid. If the starter still engages when you connect the battery cable, the plunger with contact disc is stuck inside the solenoid. Have the new starter replaced under warranty.

Have removed all mounting bolts and brackets from starter on 1994 chevy s-10. Starter is hanging loose but am unable to remove it from vehicle. Do I need to remove transmission bell housing (flywheel cover) to remove starter or is there another trick to this?

Nothing else needs removed. If you removed the mounting bolts, it should come out.

I have a 1994 s-10 4x4, manual, and there was two ways i could get the starter out. either remove the bell housing of the transmission or take the the solenoid off the starter.

With the solenoid on the starter the assembly could not come out between the frame and bell housing, but if you removed it there would be enough room to remove it.

Remove the negative(-) battery cable, then remove the wires at the starter, remove the two bolts holding the starter, be careful the starter is HEAVY! use caution removing the last bolt. Install is the reverse of the proceedure!

hi, the S terminal at the starter solenoid should not be hot, except with the key in the start position. When you release the key, it springs back to the run position and the S terminal shouldn't be hot?

If no voltage at S terminal, usually purple wire, engine running, the pinion gear may be hung up on the flywheel. Does your starter use shims? With eveything turned off, remove flywheel dust cover, where applicable, see if pinion gear is still engaged to the flywheel?
