2003 Chevy S-10 Hard to start the first time

This truck runs perfect. Only problem is starting. This truck for the past 6 1/2 years has started instantly (like a Lexus!) but recently (last 5 months) it has taken 2-3 seconds to start (fire) after sitting more then 20 minutes. When warm - no problem. Also fuel pump makes a straining noise occasionally (instead of the usual high pitch whine - you get a whine then turns into a struggle). I can even turn the starter over for a second (with no success) and on the second try it starts instantly! are these 2 problems connected?

most likely its a fuel pump issue
should check fuel pressure


Install fuel pressure gauge.
Turn ignition on, with engine off.
Fuel pump relay may need to be commanded on a few times in order to obtain highest possible fuel pressure.
Do not start engine.
Command fuel pump relay on with a scan tool. Observe fuel pressure gauge with fuel pump commanded on.
Is fuel pressure within 55-62 psi (379-427 kPa)?
if not fuel pump is at fault

so many brands - do i just look for another AC Delco fuel pump or can I trust another brand. i don't want to replace this fuel pump again!

I like the AC Delco
you don't have to
but it is important to check the wiring harness and plug after fuel tank down
very common for the connector to be bad
most new fuel module should come with new pig tail connector

Thanks for you help.

Put in the new fuel pump (ac delco) for $422.00!!! and the truck cranks up like a brank new Lexus (or chevy!)

2 caveats: it came with a new wire harness so I had to cut/splice the 4 pump/gauge wires and I failed to pay close attention to the fuel line snappy/clippy thing as the main fuel line popped off after turning key!

No one believed me when telling them that a hard to start truck was caused by a fuel pump - we all thought they just fail and leave you stranded.
