Hood mechanism broken, how do I open hood?

The hood opening mechanism broke in the cold when I was trying to open the hood of my truck to boost it (horrible weather here). I need to fix this mechanism, but I'm fine with waiting until it warms and my Haynes manual comes. In the meantime, how do I get the hood open with the in-cab latch pull broken? (Seems like the line snapped, there is no resistance when I pull on it).

When the cable breaks then on GM products you have to come in from the side with a metal hook to catch the latch. This is not easy when you are doing it blind which is required. Basically you have to poke around until you are able to pop the hood.

However, if the handle inside broke then you just need to grab the cable with a set of pliers and pull it and that will release the hood latch.

I attached a couple pictures below that will help with creating a metal rod to grab the latch.
