1999 Chevy S-10 Tires locked up

Okay so the other day I was driving and my entire truck stopped dead in it's tracks. My rear tires will not move at all and I have it sitting in neutral, please help!

it sounds to me like most likely the rear end locked up.
prior to this had it been making any noise like howling?
