1998 Chevy S-10 stop working

I drove 280 miles Tuesday and everything work find this morning on the way to work I turn on the defrost and it didnt work my temperature hand was still in the lower stage its usually in the normal range when I turn the fan switch up the temp hand move up headed toward over heating what could this be
