1997 Chevy S-10 V6 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 166000 miles

I have a very anouing humm coming from the back of the truck.I believe that it is the pumpkin.I have been calling the junk yards in my area , and i'm told by a few of the Guys that the G80 (posie/limited slip) rear end,(that is called for in my VIN #) can be substituted with the Standard rear end... ??? I want my four wheel to be four wheel... will I be able to tell the differance? The Truck also is a GU6, = 3.42 Gears with a 7.625 = ring gear. Are these guys correct in saying that I or the truck won't beable to tell the differance ! ? $$$ the diff between std. & Pos. is several hundred dollars ..$$$ al so would this be a good time to look in to disk brakes for the back ???
