1994 Chevy S-10 egr valve

the egr valve in this s10 appears to get plugged on a consistent basis. to date I have replaced 3 valves at a cost os 200.00 each. what could be making this happen? Thanks

If its the 4.3 liter I use a screen that looks similar to the faucet sink screen to block off the carbon they clog real fast ain't it.
