Starter Replacement?

These s-10s' have two different types of starters. It sounds like the starter you have in the truck has either the wrong size teeth or the wrong tooth pattern. Also I would get an AC Delco unit Be careful if you change out this starter--remember to put the shims back in and go from there. Can you provide tips/procedure for removing starter unit. (4.3 L engine) I have removed 2 wires from solenoid and 2 large bolts securing starter, but there does not seem to be enough space to extract the unit (from below).

Any additional procedures or tips? Do I have to jack engine up and/or remove motor mounts?

I have taken them out by rotating the starter to a vertical position, then thread it down through the opening behind the exhaust system. The other option is to remove the motor mount bolt and jack the engine up a bit to get more room. The second way is easier.

We have tried everything! Removed clutch, jacking engine up, and there is NO way to get that starter out! No clearance to make room. At wits end!!! This is a 1990 4x4 S-10 Blazer. Please, any suggestions that aren't obvious. Have have several good shade tree mechanics look at it and no suggestions. HELLPPPP>>>>

This is a 4.3 L engine. So frustrated I got confused.

STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

Remove or Disconnect

Place the vehicle on a hoist.

Negative battery cable.

Starter Motor Mounting On The 2.5L Engine


Brush end mounting bracket on the 2.5L engine starter motor.
Solenoid wiring. On the 4.3L, raise the vehicle halfway on the hoist, and reach through the right wheel well.

Raise the vehicle.

4 Wheel Drive Vehicles:

Four bolts on the skid plate (if equipped).
Skid plate (if equipped).

Bolts and the two brackets holding the brake line to the crossmember.

Crossmember (three bolts on each side).
Bracket holding the transmission fluid cooler lines to the flywheel housing, brace rod to the flywheel housing and/or the lower flywheel housing if necessary.

All Models:

Two bolts holding the starter to the engine.
Starter and the shim (if present).

My son came out, and after much frustration, got the motor mount loose and the engine jacked up enough to get the starter out. There just isn't any room to work on the Blazers. I am going back to Ford next time I buy a vehicle. I never saw anything so hard to work on as that Blazer s10.

How do you change the starter on a 1985 chevy s-10 4Wd? It does'nt look like their is room to get the starter out.

When necessary for access from underneath the truck, raise and support the vehicle safely using jackstands.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.


On some vehicles access to the wiring may be easier from above. Before raising and supporting the vehicle, check to see if the solenoid wiring is accessible. If so, tag and disconnect it at this time.

On 2.5L engines, remove the brush end mounting bracket from the starter motor.
Tag and disconnect the solenoid wiring.


If the wiring is difficult to access with the starter installed, remove the bolts and partially lower the starter for access to the wiring. If this is done, be careful not to stretch or damage the wiring.

If not done already, raise and support the front of the truck safely using jackstands.
If equipped, loosen the retaining bolts and remove the skid plate.
Remove the retainers and the brackets holding the brake line to the crossmember located just behind the oil pan. Reposition the brake line slightly in order to clear the crossmember.
Remove the crossmember retaining bolts, there are usually 3 on each side, then carefully lower the crossmember and remove it from the vehicle for access.
As applicable and necessary, remove the bracket holding the transmission fluid cooler lines to the flywheel housing, brace rod to the flywheel housing and/or the lower flywheel housing.
Remove the starter-to-engine block bolts. When removing the last bolt, be sure to support the starter to keep it from falling and possibly injuring you.


On some vehicles, even with the crossmember removed clearance for starter removal is tight. As the starter is lowered, it may be necessary to rotate it upside down in order for the end to clear the motor mount, then lower the nose behind the bell housing and rotate it back so the solenoid is on top and the starter may be removed.

Carefully lower the starter and shims (if equipped) from the vehicle.


To install:

Position the starter in the vehicle (along with any shims which were removed) and support while threading the starter mounting bolts. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 30-33 ft. lbs. (40-45 Nm).
If removed, install the lower flywheel housing.
If equipped, install the transmission cooler line bracket and/or the brace rod to the housing.
Install the crossmember to the frame and secure using the retaining bolts.
Carefully reposition the brake line and secure to the crossmember using the retaining brackets.
If equipped, install and secure the skid plate.
Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.
For the 2.5L engine, install the brush end mounting bracket.
Connect the solenoid wiring as noted during removal.
Connect the negative battery cable.

i have an 1985 s10 4x4 and i just replaced the starter but when i go to to the motor over there is no power being send to the inside of the cab....what should i look for? thanks

That purple wire at the starter solenoid, should be hot with key in the crank position. If it isn't, backtrack the circuit. The voltage comes from the ignition switch through the clutch to the starter.

I have both starter bolts out, all wires disconnected, and cannot remove starter, not enough room. How do you get this starter out.?

Below is the replacement procedures for the rear wheel drive truck. If your vehicle is equipped with four wheel drive just let me know.


REMOVAL:
Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Note the position of any shims, if used, for installation purposes.

Position the starter in the vehicle (along with any shims which were removed) and support while threading the starter mounting bolts.
Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 30-33 ft. lbs. (40-45 Nm).
Engage the starter solenoid wiring as noted during removal.
On 2.5L engines, install the brush end mounting bracket.
Connect the negative battery cable.

you might have to move the trans coolant line a little bit but dont take them out if you dont have to either that or remove the flywheel cover

I have a 87 s10 v6 2.8L 4WD auto trans. I have unbolted the starter to replace it but cant get it out. what do I have to take off to give me enough room

look for a bracket on the other end. also disconnect the battery and then the electrical cables going to the starter

I have done all that and the starter is loose and just laying in there. I cant bring it up because of the exhaust manifold, or down because it wont go through the available space. I have turned it every which way, but it just doesnt want to come out. There is a crossmember in the way underneath, but I am reluctant to unbolt it with me under the truck. Any ideas?

i wish i could see it from here. the only thing i suggest, is to keep maneuvering it around till it comes free. look for the easiest thing to remove out of the way, to help free up the starter.

The crossmember needs to come out. There are 3 bolts on either end. Ive had mine out a few times. Bolts can be accessed with a socket and 6 inch extension inside frame on either side. Ive had mine out on my 86 4wd more than once. Be sure to support the trans with a jack if necessary.

Or simply remove the sameside motor mount. And use a wooden block between your Jack and oil pan. Have a second person slowly Jack the motor up while you maneuver the starter out. You can do this by yourself but better and safer with a second hand!
