what is the best way for the do it youselfer to replace the upper ball joint?

Use car repair manual link in this thread or get a Haynes manual, for about $20, it will pay for itself when you open the package. But generally, raise vehicle, remove tires, support with stands under lower control arm. Remove steering knuckle. These are generally riveted in, so you will have to center punch the rivets and drill the rivets out. The new ball joints will come with bolts and nuts to replace rivets.

Hi,this might save you some time.You dont have to remove the steering knuckle.Jack up the truck and put the stands on the lower control arm,loosen up the upper ball joint nut,use a pickle fork to break it loose from the knuckle.make sure you drill out the rivets first.after you break it loose take the nut off and lift up on the upper control arm to remove it from the control arm,i just removed mine and installed it and the lower one.
