I'm replacing the distributor on my son's truck. He pulled the old one and didn't mark the orientation.

Should I just locate TDC of #1 piston on the compression stroke and make sure the rotor points to the #1 location after insertion?

the way my father taught me years ago was to disconnect the coil wire then remove number 1 plug. then while some one turns the car over use a compression guage to find the compression stroke. you can also use the thumb method by covering the number one spark plug hole with your thumb you can feel the compression when on a compression stroke. then check the timing mark. it should be close to where ist is when firing on mumber one. enclosing a diagram of where the distributor should be positioned.
