Rebuilt the engine and took the head to a machine shop for inspection/repair. Was told the valve train was in great shape so I had valve stem seals replaced for peace of mind.
Put everything back together and discovered a fault code of misfire #3. Checked the intake valve clearance and it was zero! NONE of the valve clearances were within specs-exhausts were close but not within specs. The lifters are solid type and not the shim style. So out of the 16 lifters none are at the correct clearances.
Obviously the machine shop did some seating/grinding of the valves but didn't check for valve clearances and denied ANY valve work was done.
Should I just take the head off and exchange it for a rebuilt one? Big job for me to do again. Or...can I take the cams out without removing the head and find someone to grind the lifters? Or grind the camshafts to fit the lifters?
Just a mild miss at idle and at operating speeds this (toyota corolla clone) runs great.
