Engine bearly runs at idle. Changed 7 of 8 spark plugs because I couldn't get to one. On a hunch I took the wire off of the one I couldn't change (cylinder X) and started up the engine. It runs and sounds fine while it's not connected to cylinder X. Finally able to change cylinder X's spark plug and reconnected the wire. Problem is back again. To check the wire and distributor, I took the plug out of the cylinder and ran the motor. The plug lights up fine, so I don't think it's the wire or the distributor. That is my next step, though (changing the wires, cap, and rotor), but I'm afraid it's something more serious than that... What do you think?

might want to do a compression test while the plug is out, just to be sure you arent trying to tune out a dead/low cylinder
