1989 Other Chevrolet Models steering box

The lower plug in this steering box cracked. I have never seen this on any vehicle I have worked on b-4. Any Ideas what caused it?

I would have to say this is an educated guess, but either someone either tightened it up to tight, figuring it would help a problem or it was hit by something while driving.
