Engine Cooling problem

take the thermostat out and the temperature hand runs down around 150. we've put 2 new thermostats in and then it begins running about midway between 210 and 260(max, reading). That's when I pull over and let it cool down. Someone said that it was suppose to run that high but that doesn't seem right to me. (then again, I'm just a dumb ole girl). Where should it be reading and if not that high what could be the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

The temperture should read right around 210. If it is getting too hot there are alot of things that could cause it. It's an older vehicle so the radiator could be clogged up. Hose the radiator down with water and brush it out with something with bristles that will get into the fins without damage. The fan may not be pulling enough air through the radiator. Make sure the fan engages when the engine is at or over operating temp. If the fan shroud is damaged or missing fix something in there to control the flow of air. The Radiator fluid may not be flowing as it should when the thermostat opens. Check the condition of the fluid it may need to be flushed and replaced. The pump itseself is the last thing to check and may not be pushing as much fluid as it should. Check that the belts are tight and not slipping.
