I have a corvair that has blue smoke when you just start it and for a bit afterward, which seems to clear up after driving it more than 30 min. If it was the piston rings, wouldn't this get worse not better? Do you have to drop the engine to do a ring job?

First of all I have to confess I have been a Corvair lover since I purchased my first one when I was 13, I know these cars like the back of my hand, I have currently 12, and I will not get rid of them, the problem you are describing sounds like vale glide seals, I do not believe your car has 50,000 miles, I believe it has 150,000, and it is time for a vale job.
