This car has been a very dependable vehicle however it slips out of 5th somtimes. I was recently going up a hill and it slipped out and the engine really over reved.

I figure I tore something up pretty bad. It would not drive on the road at all. Only idle. The guy that towed it back to the house said he thought it was the fuel filter. I pulled it off and it seemed pretty easy to9 blow through.

Any ideas as to what may have happened? Could the timing belt have slipped and it still be able to idle ?

I would take the belt covers off and inspect the timing belt, usually if they are off a notch there will be some valve noise (ticking).
If this is the SOHC 4ALC, I would remove the valve cover and check valve clearence.
If OK then measure fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge, also check the TPS.
