I have a 2003 monte carlo w/ 75,000 mi. 3.8L engine. Car was running like a dream one day, then without warning the next day, it started lagging. i.e. when trying to pass someone, i put the pedal to the floor, the tach revs to about 5000rpms, feels like it downshifts, but goes no faster. It will just keep the same speed and rev. Also when taking off from a dead stop, i floor it. It goes through first gear and just when you think it will shift to second, it doesn't, it just revs. Unless i let up a little then it will shift. My brother used to work for a Chevy dealership, and he said it sounded like it might be the fuel filter, cause if it's clogged and you're trying to go fast, the car may not let the tranny shift right. Now I changed the tranny fluid and filter for the first time a week ago. Fluid looked bad, but my brother said if the tranny clutches were going, i'd feel the effects over time, not just running perfect one day and terrible the next. i appreciate the input. tranny or fuel filter?
