Hello, I have a 2002 Chevy Malibu, v6 3.0 engine. 83,300 miles.

My car has severe difficulty accelleratiing, taking up to a minute to hit 40mph, and rarely can ever get above 50mph, with the "pedal to the metal". I had a diagnostic done at a shop and they said my catalatyc converter is the problem. They said it might need repairing or replacing, but would not do anything except charge me $600 to replace it with a new one. I took it to Chevy and they said it'd be close to $1,000. My question is is there any way to get it repaired or fixed cheaper? I really don't want to pay $600 for a piece if i can avoid it!

And to make me more irritated, I find the federal emmission warranty is 80,000 miles.... 3,000 miles less than what i have!!! ARRGH!

Thanks for the help!

you can try a aftermarket converter or you can go to a junk yard and see if you can find one. I don't know what shops you have tried , check out moroe muffler or something like that. Maybe A friend who is mechanically inclined could help you put a aftermarket one on. That the only thing I can think about helping you same some money,

thanks for your quick response... so basically by what i've read, there is no way to do a repair on the current one, and a different converter is needed. If so, sorry i am not familiar with "after market" but if you could give me some good plases/websites to start that would be great!

Thanks again

Aftermarket products are ones that are made by a diferent company other than a major brand. its like buying, a generic item. Go to site menu on this website and click on auto parts. it will come up as e autoparts.com. put in the cars year and make and the parts you are looking for. I took a look a minute ago and coverters start around $60. Also check out some of the other sites we have.
