2001 Chevy Malibu loud exaust

my cars exaust has gotten louder daily and today it backfired on me. before the increase in noise, it sounded like somthing was rattling in the area of the muffler. could this be something as simple as a loose pipe or muffler or is it likely to be something more serious? and how expensive is it to get something like this fixed?

looks like your catalitic converter has come apartit breaking apart was the rattle and now u will need to get the car into a muffler shop for the repairs,as for the cost it will depend on the shop that u chose and the type of replacement converter u pick lsauto
