Coolant leaking?

I took the car in because it sometimes wouldn't start, and one time it left me stranded. So i wanted to see what need to be repaired. But I'm gonna be getting rid of it hopefully soon, so I don't want to waste any more money on it.

For now, every week I am adding water to the coolant, since its been leaking for the last 2 months. The first time I noticed this, was because the car heated up and just stopped in the road. Now, the car runs but the fan keeps making noises, mostly when I'm stopped. And I think one of the fans sometimes doesn't even start or starts after a while.

So, they called me and told me that it was a joint between the coolant and the motor that needed to be fixed, the thermostat needed to be fixed, the motor belt replaced, and also to do a full system flush. All of this for $600, probably more.
I told him I just wanted the car to run for a few more weeks without spending that much money.

Do I really need all of those repairs?
I can do without the dashboard telling me the motor temp, so do I need the thermostat replaced?

I also asked about a hose with the coolant, but it's not a hose, its the joint and he said it's leaking water into the motor.

Hope you can help. Thanks!

The coolant leak is a must and so it the thermostat if you are having such heating and leaking problems. The belt I can't say need to see it and as for flushing also depends I need to see what the coolant that came out of it looks like. This guide can help us fix it

Please run down this guide and report back.

Yesterday my car overheated and I pulled over quickly only to find that my coolant had leaked out. I replaced the coolant and waited for about ten minutes, drove home(about 10 minutes) let my car sit for a while to see if coolant leaked out again. No coolant had leaked until this morning, i used my car fine this morning, it heated up very quickly. Checked the oil, had to add some more(same oil as user manual). Now my car will sputter and turn off. I just replaced the battery about a month ago. Please help!

You will have to get a coolant system pressure test done to locate any external leaks and a head check done, this is a simple chemical test to check for co in the cooling system gasses, if this is the case, you will have a head problem to sort out.

I have a coolant leak that cannot be found by the shops that I have taken my car to. After driving for a period of time, I start to smell the coolant and once stopped I can see steam or smoke from what I presume to be the leaking coolant burning on the exhaust. I have already replaced the lower intake gasket (common problem I understand) around 85,000. The shops I took it to said they cannot find anything wrong. I only notice this leak in the winter months when I need to run the heater, but the mechanics assured me that there was not a leak in the heater core.

I am stumped and in need of suggestions. Thanks in advance.

why does my car, malibu, keep leaking coolant? Large amount. I've put in two gallons this past two weeks. And I'm constantly over heating because of it. We have recently replaced the radiator and hoses, what else could it be?

There's three tests that can be performed to find the source of the leak. The first is a simple pressure test. Many auto parts stores borrow or rent tools and they will have a pressure tester with a hand pump and pressure gauge. Pump the system up to 15 psi, then you can search for an external leak.

Leaking head gaskets are very common. When coolant can leak into the combustion chamber and go out through the exhaust, combustion gases can also leak into the cooling system. Most mechanics have a glass cylinder with two chambers partially filled with a special blue liquid. Air is drawn from the radiator through the liquid. If it turns bright yellow, the head gaskets are leaking, or more rarely, a head is cracked. Typically you will also see white smoke coming from the tail pipe and the exhaust will have a sweet smell.

For slower leaks, especially when the leaking coolant evaporates and can't be easily seen, you can add a small bottle of dye to the cooling system. After driving for a few hours to a few days, you search with a black light around the engine and inside the tail pipe. The dye will make a bright yellow stain that you can follow to the source of the leak. A gallon per week would probably fall into this category since the coolant isn't running out in a matter of minutes.

If your car still has the red Dex-Cool, (Dex-Mud) antifreeze, corrosion is a common problem. In particular, the heater core in the dashboard should be checked. There will be about a 4" long rubber hose hanging down from the passenger side of the firewall under the hood. That is the drain for the water that normally condenses when the air conditioner is running. If the heater core is leaking, coolant will also drip into that drain pan and run out the tube. The end that is hanging down will be molded into a slit, not a normal round hose, so you'll have to crawl underneath and shine the black light up into it if you're using the dye method.

my light on the dashboard keeps turning on. I keep putting coolant every 2 or 3 days depending how often I use it. I dont see a leak on the floor so I don't know where is it going is it evaporating. Im afraid of the car overheating what can I do.

3.1 v6 gm motors famous for water pumps, and intake gaskets . apply air preasure to coolant or make sure coolant is full and fully hot check 4 corners of intake . extended life coolant is orange . you will see a small stream

Coolant is leaking and the coolant reservoir has to be filled on a daily or weekly basis. Now it has just started pouring out, never had a drip before until now.

Good afternoon.

You will need to do a pressure test to find the source of the leak. There are many places that it can leak and the pressure test will show where the leak is located.

Good afternoon,

Did you perform a pressure test? There are many places that can be causing that leak. The lower hose, water pump, intake manifold gasket, which is common, or the timing cover. The pressure test will pinpoint the source of the leak.

My car has been leaking coolant for the last while which requires me to replace about ever 4-6weeks. I do put on about 1500 to 2000 K every two weeks. yesterday I parked and ended up with a river of coolant. I replaced it and it seemed to be running fine but at a higher temp. After about fortyk it started to overheat and I had to put in more coolant. I got it home and parked it . It was running quite hot at that time about three quarters on the gage. I drove to work this morning it is continues to run about three quarters. Is it the thermostat? Or something worse? I had it looked at it is not the waterpump

sounds like a lower intake gasket or a water pump. have it pressure checked and see where the leak is at

Thanks for the reply. Cannot find any evidence that it is the water pump. I have asked the same again with more details. Any thing else you may think would be appreciated.

Cheers

The coolant is draining out of the car, I fill the reservoir and not even 30 minutes later it's completely empty causing the car to run hot. (We never allowed it to over heat before we pull over) Well I spotted the coolant leaking out from the side of the engine where the water pump is. Only it's further down just above the frame of the car. It's to get to because we only have a scissor jack and I don't trust it. What could be causing the leak?

hello first it still chould be a water pump issue, also it could be a heater hose or even a heater core issue. the other thing is it could be a intake

leak the 3100, 3400, and 3800, in multiple years have issues with the intake leaking. i would take the car too a shop to get it pressure tested to find out the problem

Your mechanic can locate this leak with a cooling system pressure test, failure to get tis repaired can result in serious engine damage if the over heating continues.

Hi there,

You will have to get the engine tested for a head gasket problem, check the spark plugs foe a dirty brown stain on the ceramic core, this is a sign of water in the combustion chamber, also if you are using anti freeze you may have white smoke coming out the exhaust, you can also get a test done to check for exhaust gasses in the cooling system, this is a sure sign of head gasket problems, start here.

I replaced the water pump and thermostat on my car yet it keeps leaking water. I'm sure that my radiator fan does not turn on unless I turn my AC on. Any solutions? I was told about a sensor that alerts the fans to turn on. Does anyone know where that might be located?

Have you check the intake manifold gasket for leak
Look at the back of the engine on top of tranny for coolant leak or under the power steering pump if so you need intake manifold gasket
Good luck
