2000 Chevy Malibu theft system light

2000 Chevy Malibu, 6 cyl, automatic, front wheel drive, 149,000 miles

my theft system light is blinking, even when the car is turned off. i drove it earlier, when the light wasn't on and all was fine. i got in to start the car later, and noticed this red 'theft system' light blinking. now, the car won't start, although it acts like it's trying to. any ideas on how to resolve this?
