1972 Chevelle Malibu transmission

I have a 72 chevelle, i recently rebuilt a 350, put larger cam bored it 30 over, new heads... juiced it up a little. it has a turbo 350 in it, and while i was driving it i put it in neutral and revved the engine to about 2500 rpms, and then shifted it back in to gear. there was a loud pop, that came from where the transmission is and the car died, i pulled over and started the car, it started fine, but when i tried to put it into gear, the transmission makes a sound like metal grinding against metal. i haven't asked too many people about the what the problem is, because im pretty sure i need a new transmission, and do you think i need a bigger transmission that will handle the motor a little better like a 400?

Well, a 400 would be a nice upgrade but it seems like a 350 would handle what you have. For an automatac though, revving it up in nuetral and dropping it in gear is a big "NO-NO"! For that kind of action it would be best to change over to a manual and have the clutch to play with. If you stay auto you might consider putting in a good stall converter. Depending on your cam and what kind of compression your motor has you could go anywhere from a 2000 to 3500 rpm stall and have some real fun taking off from a dead stop. Be kinda like dumping the clutch on a standard. Get yourself set up with the right parts and have a good time with your "velle". :twisted:
