A smoke test will determine if you have a cracked intake, bad intake gasket or brake booster. They inject a generated smoke from a machine and you can quickly see where you have a vacuum leak.

95 and 96 vehicles were saddled with a poor code system. They were difficult to read and were replaced with OBD11 in 97 which was easier to handle.

22 Throttle position sensor - voltage low would give you a high idle because the computer is looking for a voltage around .5 volts. Low is probably 0. replace the TPS. It is not expensive.

:D I am glad to have professional like you helping people in the Caribbean! I have a couple of codes

1-idle seed sensor code 35 is the same as idle control valve.
2-h02s error code 13 is the same as oxygen sensor.thanks again!

Humm the code 13 means you have an open circiut in the O2 sensor. It is probably bad. Those codes can interact with each other especially code 35.

I would replace the O2 sensor first. It's and easy job. It is a 13/16 size the same as a large spark plug. Don't mess with the wire when you take it out, cut it off right on the sensor.. It will allow you to get a socket over the sensor.

When you replace it don't touch the O2 element. Use an open end 13/16 wrench to just snug it tight. It doesn't need to be really tight. The sensor unplugs from a simple connector.

Here in Biloxi, Mississippi I feel like we are on an Island. Katrina took out both bridges east and west. We have one way out North. Hope it's a better year.

1999 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 125000 miles

what can be causing my engine to be idiling too high,my husband replaced the acelerator positioning switch because it was idiling so high that when i would crank it it would be idiling so much it would jump when i put it in gear.the car has always been hard to crank (i have to wait for the ignition buzzer to quit before it will crank)but now it is got worse and i have to press the accelerator to the floor then crank it .could both of these problems be related?

Transmission problem
1996 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 73000 miles

Hi, I have a few symptoms right now with my '96 Chevy Lumina, 3.1L V-6 sedan. Symptoms are as follows:

Engine overheating
When in overdrive, car will not go above 40 MPH before revving RPM's to 6K
When in regular drive, car will reach 50-55 before revving RPM's to 6K

When I keep applying gas, the engine continues to rev, I feel a large strain, smooth but still a strain, on the engine.

Soon, I have to pull over and turn the engine off for a few minutes, then restart the engine and try to go on my way.

After about 15-20 minutes driving (which is necessary for me, as going to college and back is about 45 minutes each way) even in regular drive I can not get above 40 MPH, then the engine will not get the car to move any longer.

I have checked my fluids, my transmission fluid is ok, my oil was overfilled (I'll never use that station again) and I have drained out enough oil to get it back to the level it needs to be at. But I am still having the same issue. One other thing that may be causing the over heating is only one of the fan blades is working, but sometimes neither of the two fan blades comes on.

Also, a few check engine codes are on.

1 and 2 relate to the EGR valve, but the EGR valve is new, clean, and the connection is good.

3 shows low tranny fluid or slipping in fourth gear (which is what it feels like at times as stated above)

What could be causing my problems? And how can I fix this?

Engine Performance problem
1997 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 60,000 miles

HI,
My 97 Lumina stalled on the highway the other day as soon I turned off my Airconditioning. I also have a nasty smell in my car every now and then. After the engine heats up it will start idling at a high rpm and it becomes hard to slow down and hard to accelerate. The mechanic told me to keep driving until I get a check engine lamp as he cannot tell what is wrong with the car. I told him to run pressure tests and he said he does not have the tools and only has a computer that will tell me the problem. But it cannot know until i get a check engine light. Does anyone have any ideas?

Car only has 60k miles. V6 3.1L
Please help.

Engine Performance problem
1997 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 178 miles

I replaced both heads on the engine, changed the IAC valve, checked for vacuum leaks, and engine still is idling high. I haven't did the check of the throttle body as of yet, by placing my hand over it to see if the idle will come down or not, but I have done about everything I know to do. I would really appreciate any assistance you could give me in this area. Thanks!

P.S. Vehicle has 178,000 miles

Check and clean the idle air system. Any applicable trouble codes? To check codes, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader. Some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free. Check for vacuum leaks.

I have a '93 Chevy Lumina. I changed the air fileter in the car, which was bad--but now, the car has a very fast idle until I put it in gear. (I can't run the car in the morning now to defrost the windows.) Why did this happen? Can I correct it somehow?

You may have brokeen a vacuum line in the process. Inspect all vacuum lines in that area.

take a look at your idle air control valve. remember and engine needs four things to run,: air, fuel, spark, and compression. it sounds like you have all but air.

Car is not used much, today I drove it about 10 miles and when I arrived everything was ok. When I restarted, the engine raced up and I headed home and ran about 40 mph with no pressure on the accelerator. What is wrong please?

I suspect you have a big vacuum leak, listen for a hissing sound in and around the vehicle, I just did one on the same car and it was in the front near the valve cover, the grommet that holds the hose was messed up all I had to do was replace the grommet

What would make the car idle too high on start up but slow down as soon as you started driving it? I recently did a bunch of work to the car replacing the fuel injectors, crank position, throttle position, coolant temperature and oxygen sensors and the thermostat. I also replaced the intake manifold, plenum, throttle body, EGR and valve cover gaskets. Changed the spark plugs and wires. The car has been running great and now all of a sudden it idles too high on start up with a cold or warm engine. Today I let it run for a minute and the check engine light came on. I turned the car off and checked under the hood to make sure all the wires and connections were tight and they were. When I turned the car back on there was no light and it never came on again. Any ideas?

First, have the computer scanned to identify a trouble code. It will tell you where a problem is coming from. Also, most parts stores will do it for free.

Next, check for vacuum leaks and make sure the idle air control solenoid is working properly. Either one could cause an idle problem.

Hi:
Chances are there is a problem with the throttle position sensor (TPS) or the idle air control valve (IAC). However, I can't be sure unless you have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and they should scan it for free. Let me know what codes they find.

The idle speed is controlled by metering air into the intake so if the engine is getting any unmetered air from a leak anywhere, that will do it. It can also be a faulty IAC (idle air control).

Hi, We are having high idle on our Lumina. It rarely happened in the winter but now is happening almost every time the car is started since the weather is warmer. It will rev up to 2000 rpms and will stay there until the car is shut off and restarted a few times. It has also stalled a couple times. Is there anything we can try to fix ourselves before we take it in for service? Could you please explain in detail? Thank you for any help it is very very appreciated!

Engine Performance problem
1996 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 165000 miles

The engine revs up and down when it is warmed up. It runs fine when cold. As it revs up and down i can give it a little gas and it smooths out for a few seconds then acts up again. I have check the vacuum lines and have replaced the mass air sensor with other old one. Could it be that i have another bad sensor or what. Thank You

For the past year my chevy lumina occasionaly kicks into the high idle mode and will not stop. The car will race anywhere from 5 minutes to twenty minutes while driving. It does not matter if the car is in motion or at a stop light.I have sprayed gumout and power washed the carberator. The throttle moves freely.

Did you also remove and clean the idle air control valve on top of the throttle body? If it persists, you might replace the IAC.

I had a similar problem with a 1996 Lumina. It turned out to be the coolant temperature sensor. There was corrosion on the connector terminals. I cleaned them, put silicone grease on them to seal out water and the problem was solved. Apparently the corrosion changed the resistance of the sensor making the ECM think the engine was cold and needed high idle to warm-up the engine.
