gear shift lever is very hard to put into various
gears, from neutral to drive, etc. Not sure what
the problem is.

I have read the manual, I need to know if it could be the cable needs lubricating, or if it is going to require
some repair work, est. if possible, limited income. thank you.

The cable runs from the shift lever to the transaxle, it is a braided steel cable that is housed in a plastic housing. You could try lubricating both ends but it will do nothing for the rest of the cable. The usual suspect is the cable has bgan to rust and/or fray in the housing, the loose ends of he cable are digging into the plastic housing causing resistance and making the shift lever hard to move; eventually it will break and you will not be able to shift the vehicle.

You can disconnect the cable from the transaxle and try moving the shifter, if it is still stiff replace the cable.

Just a thought, let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Dan
