Other than the iddle control what would cause the engine to race when you start it?

a damaged or unhooked vacuum hose somewhere near the intake, also the throttle plate could be gummed up so you will want to clean it also

I did what you suggested and it did not fix the problem. Any other suggestions?

next you'll want to check the throttle position sensor, it could be faulty, then fuel pressure, , then go to your engine coolant temp sensor, this is the thing with sensors, several of them could be the problem in any combination too.
