My question is I have a Chevrolet Impala 2006 (not sure the engine specs). I believe it to be an LS model? In any case just yesterday the car developed a whining/ whirring noise as I depressed the accelerator pedal. In idle it does not have that issue, except when it first starts. Is it a belt that is going out or something more?

Hi showell50,

The whining sound is most likely the power steering system telling you that it needs to be serviced. Usually it isn't a huge problem unless it's left unserviced long enough.

The Power Steering Pump/Reservoir on the LS is located on the right rear side of the engine, below the alternator, and is frequently neglected as far as periodically checking the fluid level because it is out-of-sight. It's one of the items that should be checked every time you're at the gas pump along with coolant level, oil level, and trans fluid level. I know all that takes time, but it's well worth it in the long run.
