2005 Chevy Impala Gas Smell

Well my 1st problem with your problem is there are no 4 cylinder Impala's. Either a 3.4 or a 3.8 V6 engine is all that was offered.

Now to your problem, most likely the fuel pressure regulator is leaking and I think there was a recall from Chevrolet on that but I am not sure if your particular model was involved. If you can give me the VIN number I can check. Another possibility is there is an evap leak of some sort....hose loose, gas cap loose or missing, actual gas leak at the tank or under the hood (possible injector leaking externally). Most of the time any of these will cause a service engine light to come on and the computer to store a code. If you can find the fuel pressure regulator, it has a small vacuum line going to it. Pull this line off and see if you can see raw, liquid gas in it. If so, then the regulator is leaking.

Sorry I had the year wrong, but there is a recall on fuel pressure regulators.

yes, it is the fuel pressure regulator. I had same problem going on a couple of years. took it to my mechanic and was fixed in no time. part runs you about $90.00. he did mention it is a hazzard not only to the car which could catch on fire, but also to our health inside the car as we are smelling the fumes.
