2004 Chevy Impala popping

my car pops once or twice when i am driving slow and turning the wheel from a stop. it happens both in drive and in reverse. i.e. it happens when i back out of the driveway and again when i drive forward up the street. it also happens when i make a turn at a stop sign. it doesn't happen when i am just driving slow and turning the wheel when i am making a turn into the driveway or on to a street, only when i start from a dead stop. im not sure what it is, but i am stationed 136 miles from home and i drive to and from a few times a month and i want to make sure i am safe.

Where is the poping comming from? Engine? Transhission? Steering? And only one pop, or continiuos?

the popping sounds like its coming from in front of me or under me while im driving. it only pops once sometimes twice. i cant really figure out the exact location. my ear is not tuned to listen for it.

Sometimes the inner tie rods can make what sounds almost like a coffee percolator sound, just one or two per bump, and not all bumps will do it! Also can be a bad strut and strut mounting plate.

is any of that going to affect the safety of my car? if i dont get it fixed for, say, a few months will it still be able to make the trips?

Can't say...It really depends on how much free play is in the bad part, what you need is an inspection, this question can be asked during that process.

just yesterday it started getting worse. now it is happening when im driving faster. i have noticed it more when i am either stepping on the gas or letting back off the gas when i am just driving straight.

Have the engine and tranny mounts looked at while it's at the shop.
