Yes, you need a pulley remover and installer. See if auto parts rent it.

It looks like in either V6 configuration, it calls for pump pulley removal as one of the initial steps in removal. It does not say why, and the illustration is not detailed enough to show any reason. Removal of the pulley requires a special tool, a power steering pump pulley removal tool. It may be available at a rental store, or a parts store that rents tools. I would imagine it is a fairly common tool requested.

I have two illustrations, they are for the two V6 options. It looks like the belt routing is the same in both, I believe the illustration only differs with the engine picture. The first is the 3.5, and the 3.9 is the following.

I just replaced power steering pump on my 2006 Impala. It is still making the whining noise and foaming in reservoir. I jacked up the car and moved steering wheel side to side hoping to rid air out of the system. after considerable amount of time it has not changed anything and i am afraid of damaging the new pump. Any suggestions? PS. It is making the same noise it was before replacing the pump.

It sounds like you have a defective pump that is pulling in air which makes the fluid have air in it and the noise will never go away until you redo the pump. May I suggest an AC Delco pump.

Here is a guide to show you what you are in for when doing the job:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-a-power-steering-pump

and you should flush the system.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/power-steering-fluid-flush

Here are some diagrams that shows how it will be on your car (below).

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

I need to replace/repair the power steering fluid reservoir after an incident involving the serpentine belt and disintegration of the idler pulley. There is a pen tip sized hole in the reservoir where fluid is leaking out. How do I, or CAN I, remove the power steering fluid reservoir?

I have a 3.4L impala, runs great except I replaced power steering pump 2 months ago, started noticing pump starting to whine again last month, started having to add fluid daily. Now when I put fluid in it doesn't even help, and its so hard to steer. Also my temperature gauge doesn't move, its not over heating, coolant is fine and I still have good heat! I am a poor single mom, college student and every time I bring it to a shop for a "solution" I walk out with a $500+ repair bill. I know this can be done cheaper, but would like an idea of WTH is wrong with it! Thank You

Oh I do not know where fluid is leaking..or rather pouring out of in my power steering area.

if it's leaking it's either a loose line or you have a bad steering gear or you have a line that is broken going to steering gear. you should see oil under your car when you park.

Can you provide a hint of where the fluid is leaking from? The rack and pinion assemblies cause more steering problems than the pumps.

If its the same as my 2003, it is well hidden. Look below the alternator near the firewall. Its a "feel for it" thing if you can wriggle your hands down there.

Passenger side of engine - upper left side underneath the alternator...next to the belt
you have to have long arms and small hands to reach it. Strong fingers are a plus for opening the black lid.
It helps if you remove coolant resv. first, just two small nuts.
