Engine Performance problem
2003 Chevy Impala 6 cyl Automatic 98500 miles

Hello! My car was overheating so I took it to the dealer who told me there's a water pump, and intake gaskets
leak. Additionally, they have to flush out the coolant system, all to the tune of $2200!!?? Am I a victim of the "mechanics always overcharge women" syndrome?

Ask them for a breakdown of parts and labor.For the 3.4L engine the total labor is 7 hours, for the 3.8 L engine it is 6.2 hours.Parts will be extra, but 2200 sounds very high. Even if they charged 100 an hour, the highest labor charge would be 700, leaving 1500 for parts........ I would look around for an\othe rplace to work on your vehicle.Look for ASE certified techs, they will be able to fix your car at a fraction of that price, and be sure to let the service manager know why you are taking your car elsewhere

I apologize...I made a mistake on the price...the price for the water pump and intake gaskets is $1500. Am I still a victim? Unfortunately, they already have the car...been working on it all day - itll be ready in the morning. I will however be looking for an ASC certified mechanic for the future.

That still sounds pretty high.Try calling a few shops in your area and getting quotes over the phone, just to see what they say.In the future I would call around before giving consent to repair the vehicle.If you can find an ASE certified tech in a reputable shop, the dealer isnt really necessary
