Does it matter which side of rotor that you install the brake pad wear indicator? Is it just used for visual check or is it supposed to make noise when it wears to the point of touching the rotors?

Important: The wear sensor is on the outside pad. The sensor is positioned at the leading or upward edge of the pad during forward wheel rotation.
The sensor make's noise when the pad get's low by scraping the rotor's surface.
