can you disconnect the abs brakes and not have them?

if your ABS light is on you don't have ABS working any more. Why people would want to disconnect safety items is beyond me. It is impossible for you to drive better without them as ABS allows you to stop and STEER around an object while it works. When the ABS is disconnected you don't have this ability. So if your light is on then you don't have ABS brakes anyhow.
