Typically, labor cost range from $65 to 120 an hour depending on where you go, and where you live. Replacing an EGR valve is not a big job (less than an hour), but make sure he cleans the egr passages before he puts the new valve on there.
He’s charging you $160 for the valve because he gets an OEM part from your local dealer (hopefully anyway) who has higher prices than what you find online, and your mechanic may make an extra buck out of it on top of that. Also, the unexpensive egr valve you saw at your local part store may not be an OEM part, but rather cheap part that may not have the exact same specifications as an original part.
Ask him if you can buy the part yourself and have him to install it. Some mechanics are okay with that, some aren’t.
