Transmission problem
1972 Chevy Impala 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Hello,

I got a Chevrolet Impala 1972 a couple of years ago. Recently, there was some problems with the gear shift and I had to leave it with a mechanic. When the mechanic returned the car to me, he had reversed the arrangement of the gear slots (i.e. the way the gears are entered with the gear stick), assuring me that his new arrangement was the correct one...

So, as I don't trust this particular mechanic for a million reasons... I wonder if other people could please just confirm which arrangement is the correct one.

The original arrangement in my car (or at least when I bought it) was like this:

upwards to the left: R
downwards to the left: 1
upwards to the right: 2
downwards to the right: 3

The new arrangement set by this mechanic, however, is like this:

upwards to the left: 2
downwards to the left: 3
upwards to the right: R
downwards to the right: 1

I would really appreciate any feedback as soon as possible. Tomorrow, I need to bring my car to (another) mechanic for a possibly related problem, and I need to know my stuff...

Thanks,

Thomas
