My 4 speed linkage kept getting hung up when I'd shift. When I checked the linkage, sure enough, several of the nuts that hold the 3 linkage arms to the trans. were loose. When I tried tightening the nut on the reverse gear the bolt sheared off about 1/2 inch. I can now just barely get a nut on the bolt with no room for the lock washer.

Question: Can I remove that bolt (stud) and replace it w/o removing the trans.? There's very little room. What would you suggest?

i would try removing the driveshaft , holding up trans with tranny jack remove trans crossmember , slowly lower trans till it hangs as low as possible , this might allow you enough room to replace stud . you might have to drill stud out and use a helicoil
