Engine Performance problem

when i start my 98 chevy express cargo van, everything seems fine. but when i put it into gear, it begins to surge and idles erratically. when i push the accelerator, it bogs way down and sometimes will stall. this happens for about a minute or so and then everything works fine. it has recently begun happening every time i start it. what are some possible causes?
