2006 Chevy Equinox too much oil

I just had my engine light go on after leaving the gas station. Just bought the car last week, didn't know what the light meant. I thought it was for the oil. I checked the oil dip stick but it isn't marked on there with a full line. I put 4 quarts of oil in because the light wouldn't go off after each one. After 4 I realized it was the engine light not oil! (yes, I am a girl). I just found the answer to the engine light (thanks and I donated $5 for that) The cap is not going on secure enough. But now I have way too much oil in it! Will it hurt anything? Thanks in advance for your help!
