2005 Chevy Equinox Battery replacement

I took my car to the mechanics and was told my alternator went out on my 2005 Equinox and was aslo told that I need a new battery. To my understanding I thought my battery would recharge once the new alternator is put in. Is this correct?

If the battery is still good, yes it will unless it is completely dead. I would recommend having it recharged and replace the alternator. If the battery was good, it should still be okay.
