1985 Chevy El Camino V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Recently while starting my car, there was a delay before the engine turned, which was my first sign of car problem. That same day after getting to my destignation, I tried starting it back it but I got nothing. No sound of struggle or ticks from the starter. So I thought it might've been the starter. I swapped out my starter and got it rebuilt and placed it back in but still get nothing. So I'm thinking it could be my ignition switch. My problem is, I don't know where to locate this switch. What are the procedures in replacing the ignition switch and where can I locate it? or....Do you think it may be the ignition switch or is it the alternator?

You can have your alternator tested for free at many auto parts stores such as O'Reilly Auto Parts or AutoZone. If your alternator is good then it is probably your ignition switch. Below are procedures on removal and installation of the switch.

REMOVAL:
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Put the ignition switch in the Accessory (ACC) position.
Although not absolutely necessary, you may wish to remove the ashtray and radio at this point for ease of access.
Insert a wire into the small hole in the face of the lock cylinder. Push in on the wire to depress the plunger. Continue turning the key until the cylinder can be removed from the switch.
Remove the switch bezel nut, and then pull the switch out from under the dash.
Go in from the front of the switch with a screwdriver and unsnap the theft resistant locking tangs on the connector and then unplug the connector.

INSTALLATION:
Engage the electrical connector to the switch, then position the switch under the dash and install the switch bezel nut.
Install the lock cylinder to the switch. It most applications, the key should be installed and turned to the ACC, START or RUN positions in order to install the cylinder. If in doubt, check the switch or cylinder manufacturer's instructions, as applicable.
Once the cylinder is installed, turn the key back to the LOCK position.
Connect the negative battery cable, then verify proper switch and cylinder operation.

FYI- The ignition switch is where the key is inserted on the steering column.
