chevy rear break pad replacement

You say you have to rotate the cylinder as you push it in to retract it. How much do you rotate it and in which direction?

rotate clockwise , you should have the right tool to do it or you will damage the caliper or piston dust boot , and it goes in till it bottoms out , they are self adjusting , so when you bottom them out and put them on drive it and use the e-brake while sitting still over and over till the pedal feels tight
