Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Chevy Celebrity 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 220k miles

Hi, I am trying to remove the crankshaft flywheel/damper etc, to get the timing gear cover off on a 2.5 4cyl chevy celebrity... I have removed the right front tire, and have it on supports.

Now I need to get it off, but i am not sure how to keep the flywheel in place while removing it... any suggestions?
I also need to know which way to turn the bolt...as it may be reverse threaded....

i put a breakerbar with the correct socket on the bolt
(it's lefty loosey, righty tighty)

and rest the breaker bar against something on the frame.

then i hit the key to try to turn the engine over.

the bar will fall out of place and the socket may go shooting across the garage, but that's how i loosen the bolt if i dont have air tools handy.

well that will be a problem.

take the starter off and you can stick sometime where the snout of the starter goes.
you will have to hold it in place to make sure it wedges against a tooth of the flexplate and inside the bell housing of the starter.

then you can try to take out the bolt.
but it's going to be very tight.

got it off...removed the starter, and put a big flathead in the teeth of the gears...and it came off easy. :-)
