Engine Cooling problem

The engine keeps over heating, we've replaced the fan motor, and temp sensors.
The fan was only coming on for about 20sec at a time then turning off again but would not stay on as the engine over heats. So we hardwired the fan to a toggle switch to turn in on from in the car.
The car is still over heating bad. We can drive it for about 20min the it goes put...put...put and then will die shortly after. If we wait for it to cool it will start up again and we can go about 20 more mins or so. This is with the fan on all the time to.
