I replaced the 305 in my 84 Z28....I have drivin it for a week now and am starting to have problems with it overheating....it started running around 160 degrees....the gauge would slowly rise to the start of redline at 250 degrees and after about 10 seconds would go back down to 220 degrees....I replaced the thermostat....that wasnt the problem, after removing the new thermostat I learned it was not opening up so I took it out all together....I hooked up the pressure tester and found no leaks....I replaced the radiator cap and the top radiator hose....I then completely flushed the radiator and replaced the coolant....before driving it the next day I checked the coolant level and it was full....it ran around 160 degrees for about 20 miles....on the way home down the interstate the tempature rose to the begininning of the redline at 250 degrees....I pulled over to turn the car off and the tempature went back down to 220 degrees....a mile later it redlined at 260 degrees....I turned the car off and saw fluid dripping from the passanger side in the front....the resorvoir's coolant level was above the full hot line....I waited 15 min. and checked the coolant level in the radiator....I added about a half a gallon of water to fill it up and drove it 5 miles home....it ran 160 degrees the whole way home....why am I running so hot?
