I am an extremely novice of very limited mechanical ability, however I can follow instructions. My 2004 Chevy Cavalier(2.2 liter, auto transmission,) ac, two wheel front wheel drive[98,500 mileage] is having serious mpg drop over the last 1500 miles and I know that the 100,00 mile scheduled "tuneup" will be coming up very shortly. I suspect plugs are getting in bad shape, but I also suspect that the fuel filter may be the culprit as I am not, repeat not experiencing any rough engine, or trouble starting it, or loss of power to speak of so I am focusing on the fuel filter for now....I have no idea if their is one or two fuel filters on the 2.2 l engine and where they are located..... Can you help me to find the fuel filter(s) so I can replace it or them to see if that is in fact the culprit....Thank you very much and I hope you choose to have a very, nice day if you want to.
Sincerely Jerry P. Heggem

Hey Jerry...

Yeah it needs some attention..the recommended changes are a little out of line with reality.

To answer your question....the fuel filter is located in the rear of the car. I think it is a 17 mm and a 22 mm wrenches you need..not positive. You need to remove the charcoal cannister to access it..one bolt holds it there ..10 mm ?

This guide will help walk you through the job with the location in the diagrams below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-change-a-fuel-filter

There is a disconnect on one side and a threaded portion on the other. The disconnect side can be removed by pressing n the two detents holding it there and pulling the filter out. Look at the new one to better understand that. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Are there any engine light codes on? If so, retrieve them and post and I will follow up with diagnosis for them.

Fuel filter should be located right above the rear axle.
Removal/Installation instructions of your fuel filter (only one) are below.

REMOVAL:
Relieve the fuel system pressure by doing the following.

RELEIVING FUEL PRESSURE:
Disconnect the negative battery cable in order to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine.
Loosen the fuel tank filler cap in order to relieve fuel tank pressure.
Connect a fuel pressure gauge (with bleed hose) to the fuel pressure test port connection. Wrap a towel around the fuel pressure connection when installing the fuel pressure gauge in order to avoid fuel spillage.
Install the bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve in order to bleed the fuel system pressure. The fuel pipe connections are now safe for servicing.
Drain any fuel remaining in the fuel pressure gauge into an approved container

REMOVAL (continued):
Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line using a back-up wrench on the filter.
Grasp the filter and nylon connection line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting from the fuel filter.
Remove the fuel filter from the bracket.

INSTALLATION:
Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter and to the fuel sending unit assembly connection. This will help ensure proper connection and prevent possible fuel leaks. During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper connection if not lubricated.
Install the fuel filter in the mounting bracket.
Connect the quick-connect fitting to the fuel filter using the following procedure:
Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male ends of the filter and the fuel sender assembly.
Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to be sure they are secure.
Install or connect the following:
New O-ring
Fuel filter. Torque the fitting to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
Negative battery cable
Pressurize the fuel system and verify no leaks.

Wear safety glasses, try to clean all that crap off the fittings, the best you can. Info below. Don't take any fittings loose, unless your sure there is no pressure on the system.

I looked at two different databases, showed the same thing. Maybe it isn't a tab that you grab, maybe it is a collar?

checked out a J body forum and there is some kind of palstic ring tool that is placed around the nipple of the filter and you push that in to onlock tabs that are inside the collar of the factory line. did the database say anything like that?

Just bought a car that has not been running for 1.5 years. Have run it for a couple days. Added fuel conditioner. Ran for another day. Tried to start today but no luck.
Car turns over but does not fire up. Would like to know where to find and how to replace fuel filter to start.

Information below is for fuel injected vehicles. If your vehicle is equipped with a carburetor let me know..

An inline filter can be found in the fuel feed line attached to the rear crossmember of the vehicle. To locate the filter, follow the fuel line back from the throttle body. Inline filters are often mounted to the frame rail underneath the vehicle. It may be necessary to raise and safely support the vehicle using jackstands in order to access the filter.

Properly relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined earlier in this section.
If necessary, raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.

Always use a back-up wrench anytime the fuel filter is removed or installed.

Using a backup wrench (where possible) to prevent overtorquing the lines or fittings, loosen and disconnect the fuel lines from the filter. Be sure to position a rag in order to catch any remaining fuel which may escape when the fittings are loosened. Remove and discard any fuel line O-rings.
For 1992-94 vehicles, grasp the filter and nylon fuel connection line fitting. Twist the "quick-connect" fitting 1 / 4 or a turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Use compressed air to blow out the dirt from the fittings at the end of the fuel filter.
If equipped, detach the quick-connect fitting by pushing inward toward the filter and grasping the plastic tab around the connector and pull apart. If additional assistance is required to disconnect the fitting, tool J 38778 or equivalent can be placed between the filter and the fitting release mechanism to carefully force the two apart. Be careful not to bend the special tool.
Remove the fuel filter from the retainer or mounting bolt. For most filters which are retained by band clamps, loosen the fastener(s) and remove the filter. For some filters, it may be necessary to completely remove the clamp and filter assembly.

To install:

Before installing a new filter, apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter. This will ensure proper attachment and prevent a fuel leak.
Position the filter and retaining bracket with the directional arrow facing away from the fuel tank, towards the throttle body.

The filter has an arrow (fuel flow direction) on the side of the case, be sure to install it correctly in the system, the with arrow facing away from the fuel tank.

Install and tighten the filter/bracket retainer(s), as applicable.
If equipped with "quick-connect" fittings, push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place. Pull on both ends of the connection to be sure they are secure.
Using new O-rings, connect the fuel lines to the filter, then tighten, using a backup wrench to prevent damage, to 20-22 ft. lbs. (27-30 Nm).
If raised, carefully lower the vehicle.
Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the fuel filler cap, then start the engine and check for leaks.

No, the database didn't say anything about using a tool. The databases are not always correct.

There is a duck-bill GM fitting. You use a tool around the line, slide tool down the line into front of fitting, push until connector is released then pull line apart. Your local auto store should have this tool. Agian, make sure there is no pressure on the system.

thanks for the reply, went and got a tool but there is not enough room to get it in. reading further suggests hacksawing the nipple on the old filter and then using the tool.
As for depressurizing the system...everything read says to pull the fuel pump relay and let the engine die. I have the problem where the car wont start to begin with. Is there an alternative way to accomplish this?

Use a rag around the schrader valve, where applicable, press the schrader valve.

The supply line from tank to filter, is it short? Can you disconnect from tank. If so replace line with filter. Check for the part first. I don't like the idea of doing anything that might create a spark.

I have looked all over for a shrader valve and there isnt one, even took off all the covers ontop of the engine so i coud look along the fuel rail. I was going to do a fuel pump pressure check first before changing the filter. Seems this car isnt very service friendly all around.

REMOVAL: 1.Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF. 2.Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 3.Disconnect the filter attaching screw and filter. NOTE: If the nylon fuel feed or return connecting lines become kinked, and cannot be straightened, they must be replaced. 4.Grasp the filter and one nylon fuel connecting line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat with the other fitting. WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury. *Using compressed air, blow out the dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the filter. 5.Disconnect the quick-connect fittings: *Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male end connector and pull the connection apart. Repeat for the other end of the filter. 6.Remove the fuel filter. INSTALLATION: WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury: *Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter and the fuel level meter assembly. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated). *If a new fuel filter or filter line is nicked, scratched or damaged during installation, it must be replaced. 1.Remove the protective caps from the new filter. 2.Install the new plastic connector retainers on the filter inlet and outlet tubes. *Install in the same positions as on the old filter. 3.To connect the quick connect fittings: a.Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends of the filter and of the fuel level meter assembly. b.Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap in place. c.Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure they are secure. 4.Secure the fuel filter on the frame with the fuel filter attaching screw. 5.Tighten the fuel filler cap. 6.Connect the negative battery cable.
