The air conditioner in our 2005 Chevy Cavalier has started making a clicking sound. It seems to work fine but makes the sound whether the a/c is on or not. The only way we have been able to get the noise to stop is to switch it from recycled air to the regular fan or vice versa. Lately, it has taken longer for the clicking sound to stop. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

The clicking is the clutch engaging. It will do this when AC is commanded or when in defrost mode.

If it occurs other than described above, I would suspect a bad relay or AC switch.

Would this be the case if the sound continues when the a/c is turned off?

Yes, most likely a switch, possibly a relay.
