2003 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive

My gas gauge does not work ( the needle never moves) I was told my one mechanic that it was the sensor connected to the fuel pump. But there is a gauge ( red light ) that comes on which says, "check gauges", and when I put gas in my car this light goes out. So I assume this is a warning light to let me know I am low on fuel. And someone told me that this is also operated through my sensor, and they doubted the sensor was bad since this red warning light comes on when I am low on gas.
This makes it hard for me to go very far from home because I am never sure how much gas is in my car.
Thank you for any halp you can give.

There is a sensor in the tank that sends a signal to gauge.

But since the warning light is on, then it is most likely the gauge.

A dealer or trusted garage would have to test gauge.
