Engine Performance problem
2003 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive 60,000 miles

My 2003 Chevy Cavalier is at 60K miles. Everything was working fine;just passed inspection & had regular maintenance. I drove it on a 6-hr. trip in very cold weather. The next day, it would not start. The engine cranked but would not turn over. A mechanic said I need a new fuel pump. Can anyone tell me if that is normal for my car at 60,000 miles and if there is ever any warning before a fuel pump goes and how much this repair should cost? Thanks.

If pump is not working, check fuse and relay first.

It is not normal for pump to go out at 60K, exception would be that if you run car out of gas frequently, it will cause pump to fail prematurely.
